Dr. Who

I was so reluctant to watch Dr. Who, I'm not exactly sure why, maybe because lately I'm reluctant to watch shows that are about men, and the things men do, or I had formulated an impression of the show as old and stuffy without really knowing anything about it.

I guess the only real, tangible thing I knew about the show was [personal profile] flummery's Handlebars vid. I saw it years ago and thought the commentary was just brilliant even without knowing the show. Now that I've watched the trajectory of the tenth doctor it makes EVEN more sense and I think it is EVEN more brilliant. I hate to say it, but as I rewatched the vid last night I feel like I may not have wanted to watch the show because it so brilliantly, demonstrated the arrogance and privilege that is the doctor. What I didn't get from the vid, before watching the show is that I would get sucked into this amazing world with this captivating character, I didn't know that I would totally fall into fangirl love with the world of Dr. Who.

So all that is to say that now that I am caught up on Dr. Who I think [personal profile] flummery's Handlebars vid is 1000% times more brilliant then I originally did! I know you've all seen it but you should just go watch it again, right now, just because.

Title: Too Many Dicks - Video Games
Vidder: [personal profile] seedling
Song: Flight of the Conchords
Fandoms: Video Games
Summary: There are too many dicks on the dance floor
Download links coming soon

I finished my first vid/remix (kind of a cross over of the two) anyway, I'm super excited about it. I was actually inspired by [personal profile] sloanesomething's Dance Floor vid, I loved how she subverted the sexist Flight of the Conchords song to illustrate the male dominance in the new Star Trek movie and I think it can be applied to many fandoms and various types of media.

Thanks to Becca Marcus and [personal profile] laurashapiro for beta-ing and also Jonathan McIntosh for his meticulously detailed suggestions throughout the creation process.

It is no secret that most video games star overly muscular men often carrying big swords, guns, baseball bats, chainsaws and other phallic weaponry. Many of these games normalize a macho masculinity and glorify war and the military. They especially celebrate grotesque displays of violence. Few popular games provide any opportunity for creative non-violent forms of conflict resolution and with the ever growing graphic technology, the blood and gore seem to look more and more real. And now with first person shooter games, players can really experience the destruction and gore up close and personal.

Not only are these games dominated by male characters but even the few women characters who get staring roles are replicating the overly patriarchal, violent, macho behaviour all wrapped up in a hyper sexualized body. I specifically used clips from two games that help to counter this male dominance: Portal a game of strategy and Mirror's Edge which stars a woman of color in a dystopian future.

Not surprisingly the vast majority of game producers, designers and writers are men. To put it simply, there are too many dicks on the dance floor!

I have been busy organizing this great event coming up in March at California State University, Northridge. If you live in or are visiting the Los Angeles area you should come out and watch some of the most intriguing remix videos that subvert traditional gender and sexuality norms. The videos will be curated and presented by Julie Levin Russo, Alexis Lothian and Jonathan McIntosh. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the curators. Special thanks to [personal profile] laurashapiro who consulted on the event.

Political Remix Video is a genre of transformative guerilla media production whereby creators challenge dominant media messages through re-cutting and re-framing fragments of mainstream media and popular culture. Fan videos or “vids” set remixed footage from TV shows or movies to music. They are often used to subvert the traditional canon or tell an alternative story. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at anita [at] feministfrequency.com

Speakers:
Julie Levin Russo (Stanford) and Alexis Lothian (USC)
Jonathan McIntosh, creator of Buffy vs Edward
Hosted by Anita Sarkeesian (FeministFrequency.com)

This episode was another "religious" episode so I'm not going to analyze a lot of it...

Okay I'll admit it, Dollhouse made me cry, and I definitely was not expecting that.

This seemed to be the "gay" episode of Bones, I don't recall them ever dealing with a queer character in the past, or at least not as blatantly as this (of course correct me if I'm wrong).

As I'm getting more and more into my MRP I wished I had taken more detailed notes on the shows I've watched. I usual transcribe especially juice lines but I don't often do recaps with my thoughts on them... so for future reference, to compile my thoughts, especially for vlogging purposes I think I'm gonna start doing that here.

I'd love to here what other folks are thinking about these shows, whether you agree with my thoughts or not. I'm hoping that talking through these specifics helps make our critical analysis stronger.

I'm looking for any writings that have been done on women being violated/invaded in scifi/fantasy shows and movies. I'm thinking of characters like Deanna Troi (TNG) who always had aliens and such invading her body, taking it over, or impregnating. This theme is so reoccurring, I presume there is some work written on it, but I'm not even sure where to look.

Any direction is much appreciated! Thanks.

Dollhouse

I actually didn't hate these last two episodes of Dollhouse "Stop-Loss" and "The Attic"

Randomly quick thoughts:

I found it to be quite interesting and exploratory, I wish the show had started out this dynamic instead of incredibly offensive and/or dull at every turn. Big drawbacks of the entire season previous to now was a total lack of discussion about how fucked up the dollhouse was, and some would argue otherwise but I don't think small comments here and there are sufficient when dealing with violence against woman. Also having us feel sympathy with the people running the dollhouse from the beginning was a bit much. Now having them sort of band together, I appreciate but that does not make running that nonconsentual brothel acceptable. What the writers have done is make something bigger and badder then what they are doing by running the LA dollhouse which makes it seem like they have struggled with the morality of the work and are fighting against it... but so far, they haven't said that the coersion and renting out of bodies is a bad thing, just the "extra" steps that Rossum has gone. So that is troubling still.... but, even with that, it's still going somewhere interesting.

I also didn't think Eliza Dushku was a strong enough actor to play the starring role but I feel like giving her a more dynamic character has provided her a lot more to work with and she is growing Echo into a really strong character.

Angel

I finally finished all of Angel and I had already watched season 5 (ya I know, kinda backwards) so I didn't expect greatness but wanted to watch it anyways, well - just because! So I expected it to be bad but I didn't expect it to be a totally disastrous train wreak. *sigh*

This show reaffirmed for me that Joss and his crew need some serious anti racist training, all of his show end up including offensive characters, comments, and story lines. Some of it worse then others, but I can see how the writers are trying to "do good" and talk about real issues, but sorry Whedonverse writers, you keep getting the ultimate message wrong.

On a positive note however, I really enjoyed Cordelia's character in Seasons 2 and 3 (I'm going to pretend Season 4 never happened). Her personal growth and the slow and meaningful building of her relationship with Angel was rather sweet and believable. (and I'm so glad they brought her back for an episode in Season 5, so the last we see of her isn't... well evil)

Ultimately, I feel like the show represents the antithesis of what I love in Buffy, the bruting, must save the day by myself, it's all my fault, I have to protect everyone and beat up women (but of course it's to save them) existence of Angel is just like every other male hero character and god knows we have too many of them as it is. Angel was manageable and I even liked him on Buffy, but his own show should never have happened. Plus if I hear the word Champion one more time *shakes fist*

Oh, I did also enjoy Lorne's character for what it's worth. I went back and watched [personal profile] laurashapiro's video about Lorne God Bless the Child and can now better appreciate the emotional struggles she is representing all wrapped up in the warmth of Billie Holiday's voice.

Me
I got invited to do a videoblogging work shop with Reel Grrls out in Seattle. They are a great org that provides after school type classes in media production for teenage women. I'm gonna have the young women do some media literacy with some tv shows and movies that they are into... but... I got a list of some of the shows they are watching and OMG! I haven't watched a single episode of any of them. I'm gonna try and check out a few episodes to get a sense of the shows but I would love love love and appreciate any thoughts you have on any of these shows, representation-wise, messaging-wise, minor or large details, whatever you want to share I would more then welcome!

The shows:

- Gossip Girl

- The Hills

- Friday Night Lights

-The City (never even heard of this one!)

-Keeping up with the Kardashians (and I just have to saying being Armenian and growing up with no one knowing what Armenian is, this show scares the crap out of me)

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

The Real Reason Guys Should Hate Twilight

Here is an easy to follow guide for the guys on the right versus the wrong reasons to hate on Twilight. With the release of New Moon, there has been an awful lot of sexist, homophobic, patriarchal crap floating around the internet and I just wanted to set the record straight.

Beyond True Blood's Sensationalism

From the first time I heard about the concept behind HBO’s True Blood I was a little bit horrified. Vampires are “coming out of the coffin” and want equal rights? Since television producers (and especially HBO) want to make shows that are as sensational and scandalous as possible, I had my doubts about whether they could provide commentary about social justice struggles in America without being painfully offensive, ignorant and stereotypical. I am unhappy to report that, no, they completely failed.

Firefly

So, I'm gonna give Firefly another chance... I've had a handful of folks tell me I need to watch it in the "correct" order and not the way it was aired.

So is this the correct order?

1. Serenity (pilot)
2. The Train Job
3. Bushwacked

and so on?

Okay back to the drawing board... This vid isn't going to work out... so now to brainstorm a new concept, new song... hmmmmmm.....
VM - Taser
Okay... so now with a total reconstruction of this vid most of the scenes don't correlate with the music... It feels very weird. This is supposed to be fun right?
